At its October 3, 2011, meeting, the Bessemer City Council unanimously approved the hiring of Michael Uskiewicz as its new city manager. He will replace current manager Tom Chatel who decided not to seek renewal of his contract which expires on November 30. He will start November 28.
Uskiewicz last worked as the city manager of Toccoa, GA, a city with a population of about 9,500. In an October 13 interview with the Ironwood Daily Globe, Uskiewicz acknowledged that Bessemer has a smaller population than other cities he managed; offering him challenges to do more with less. He added that he will push for assistance and input of all Bessemer residents.
Uskiewicz has three grown children who live outside the area. His youngest, Michael Jr., will soon enter active duty in the Army.
